African Professional of the Year 2011

Dr Berhan Ahmed is the Chairperson for the African Think Tank and currently based in Victoria. Dr Ahmed was born in Eritrea. He completed his Master’s degree at Melbourne University. After completing his degree he worked for CSIRO for 10 years – completed his PHD leading to his current role of Senior Research Fellow, Department of Forest Ecosystem Science at the University of Melbourne.

  • In 2004 Dr Ahmed was the first African-Australian in history to stand for Parliament.
  • In 2009 he received the Victorian Australian of the Year award.
He encourages people to focus on the things that unite us as human beings, not the superficial differences. He initiated and implemented a number of projects for Melbourne's African community to raise the standard of living, educational engagement, achievement, level of employment, and integration.
He actively encourages young people in shaping their own futures with a confidence that comes from a sense of pride in their identity.
